At Fernbank’s new special exhibit, Creatures of Light: Nature’s Bioluminescence explores the science behind the beautiful mysteries of night creatures. From flickering fireflies found in backyards around the world, to the alien-like deep-sea fishes and other fantastic creatures that illuminate the perpetually dark depths of the oceans. Your family can “move through a series of re-created environments, from the familiar to the extreme, to explore the diversity of organisms that glow and how they do it; discover the variety of ways in which light is used to attract a mate, lure unsuspecting prey, or defend against a predator; and learn how, where, and why scientists study this amazing natural phenomenon.”

Do you have a few sneaker heads in your family? The High Museum of Art newest exhibit, Out of the Box: The Rise of the Sneaker Culture examines the phenomenon behind the explosion of pop culture’s obsession with sneakers. The exhibition displays 155 types of sneakers, tracing their history from the 19th century to present day. You will see sneakers made by popular and well-known manufacturers including Adidas, Converse, Nike, Puma and Reebok. You’ll also see those of private collectors, such as hip-hop legend Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, sneaker guru Bobbito Garcia, and Dee Wells of Obsessive Sneaker Disorder and more. 

Music At Noon At Centennial Olympic Park

Then pack a picnic and head to Centennial Olympic park for Music at Noon for the perfect lunchtime getaway! Every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. through October enjoy a variety of live music including pop, R&B and jazz, performed by some of Atlanta’s favorite local artists. While you’re downtown, take in the scenery of the beautiful cityscape, restaurants, and attractions in the area too.
