CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. (CW69 News at 10) — Four people are dead, including a Clayton County Police officer, after a shooting in the community of Rex. Neighbors described how some of the bullets hit their homes.
Several residents heard the gunshots as the suspect, Arthur Allen Gilliam, 35, fired at Clayton County Police near his home on Jervis Court. Some watched in horror as the events unfolded, including an anonymous neighbor who shared video of the gunfire exchange. “It’s just bad,” said Dwight Lamar, a next-door neighbor. “I’m trying to just get it out of my mind and just go on.”
Investigators say Gilliam shot and killed Officer Henry Laxson and shot Officer Alex Chandler in the hand. They were responding to a domestic incident at the home where Gilliam reportedly shot and killed two women and shot a 12-year-old boy in the face. Police had not identified the women as of Wednesday afternoon. Lamar says he knew the suspect and never thought he would do something like this.
“He shot my car up,” he said, pointing to a bullet hole above the passenger door window and a cracked windshield. His home and several other houses were riddled with bullet holes.READ MORE: Sarasota Man Arrested In Connection To Fatal Shooting At Ackerman Park
Some heard the shots that were fired before officers arrived.
“I was very traumatized. I had came to the window and I saw a young boy running and the next thing I saw was a car speed off,” said Yvette Lee, another neighbor. She was one of several people who called 911 and later heard more gunfire. when police responded.
“After everything calmed down, I looked in my living room window, and there was a bullet hole, which came through the window and lodged in the bathroom. I give my condolences to the family, and we do have a new mayor now, Mr. Dinkens,” she said referring to Atlanta Mayor-elect Andre Dinkens, who is slated to take office in January. “I’m just hoping we can put an end to this violence.”MORE NEWS: Brothers Arrested And Facing Charges For Shooting Into Vehicle
Police say the 12-year-old boy is in critical condition. Both the Clayton County Police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating the case.
