ATLANTA, Ga. (CW69 News at 10) — About 100 pediatric cancer patients will take a spin in some exotic cars on September 18, 2021, for the 15th Annual Rides to Remember charity event at Atlanta Motorsports Park. They will get the ride of a lifetime during the fundraising event, which ties into the race to fight childhood cancer.
Fast and exotic cars have nothing on Lucas Asselin, 12, a pediatric cancer survivor. “I’m excited for it, because there are cool cars. It’s usually like, a fun time hanging out with my dad for a day,” he said. He lost an eye to cancer and wears a prosthetic one. His dad, Jeff Asselin, says he’s more than a survivor. “He had chemotherapy the first six months of his life and he’s been a regular kid ever since. It hasn’t slowed him down one bit,” Jeff said. Luke has been around the track a couple of times and can’t wait for another spin. “It’s like, ‘It’s coming up, ok, I gotta clear my schedule, because it’s always a really fun event,’” Luke said. “It’s just such a great way for the community to give back to these cancer survivors,” said Jeff.
Organizers spent the afternoon preparing at Ferrari of Atlanta in Alpharetta. “We focus all of our attention on the activities and the fun and just making it a fun day for the kids. That’s what it’s really about,” said Rides to Remember Event Director Olivia Malifa. The dealership has participated for more than a decade. “To me, the meaning of giving back is just unparalleled. To see the smiles on the kids faces when they get to ride in a Ferrari that is, as we know it, a dream car for adults as well, and to be able to give back and be part of the dream is just priceless,” said Michael Mills, a volunteer and Ferrari sales representative. “We all come back year after year just to create those smiles,” Malifa said.
