TOCCOA, Ga. (CW69 News at 10) – On Wednesday, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) arrested Ronald Thomas, 49, of Athens for 10 counts of Elder Exploitation, according to a GBI statement.
On August 21, the Toccoa Police Department requested that the GBI investigate the exploitation of an elderly citizen. At the time of the commission of the alleged crimes, Thomas was employed as an Adult Protective Services (APS) Case Worker with the Georgia Department of Human Services. Through that role, Thomas allegedly stole money from the victim. The DHS suspended Thomas without pay pending an internal investigation.
The crimes were allegedly committed in three North Georgia counties, Union, Stephens, and Clarke.
Thomas was booked into the Stephens County Detention Center.
Charges are merely accusations, and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
The case is still ongoing, but upon completion will be prosecuted by the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.
