STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (CW69 News at 10)

The Gwinnett County Police Department is investigating a traffic accident that lead to a death.

On Thursday, July 16, at around 10:45am, officers were conducting traffic enforcement in the area of Stone Mountain Highway near East Park Place Boulevard in unincorporated Stone Mountain.  Officers observed a black passenger car committing a traffic violation and attempted to pull the driver over.  The driver fled.  The GCPD officer did not engage in a pursuit of the violator and changed his course of direction.

Shortly after the attempted traffic stop, DeKalb County PD and GCPD officers drove upon an accident on Stone Mountain Highway westbound over the West Park Place Boulevard bridge.  There was a black passenger car and a gold SUV involved.  Officers discovered that the black passenger car was the same as the one who had just fled from the attempted traffic stop.

The driver of the black passenger car sustained injuries.  Multiple passing motorists stopped to control and comfort the injured driver prior to officers arrival. GCPD officers approached the scene and attempted to render aid.  The driver was in medical distress and had to be restrained for transport to the hospital for treatment.  He later died.

At this time, it is still unclear what the driver died from.  No GCPD officer utilized any deadly force weapon against the driver.  The gold SUV was abandoned on the side of the road at the time of the accident.

The name of the deceased is being withheld until his next-of-kin can be notified.  An autopsy will help determine the cause of death.
