This just might be the real “Rogue”.
Yeah….I know Nissan has an SUV called Rogue”, but hey….come on….if vehicles were really named according to their character, BMW’s M550i xDrive just might own the name.
The M550i rolls up to pick up your daughter in a hand-tailored four-figure athletic-cut suit….confidence brimming from his well-chiseled face….with all the grace and manors that you’d expect from well-heeled, educated old money.
But after they leave, you can just barely hear him two blocks away as he hits the “Sport Mode” and makes that M550i snarl and burble on it’s way to 60 MPH in less than 4 seconds.
Yes….this “real” rogue….BMW’s M550i xDrive…..can be one bad boy.
Or…..just a composed and mild-mannered 4-door, 5-passenger, always-willing and ever so competent sedan. Your call.
The 5 Series is BMW’s mid-sized sedan. Ample room for 5 passengers….classic BMW looks….and 6-second 0-60 performance, even with its’ standard 2.0 liter twin-turbo 248 HP four cylinder. You’ll get an 8-speed automatic, and window stickers will start in the low 50’s.
Add around another 5 thousand and enjoy BMW’s 335 HP 6-cylinder and cut around a second off the above 0-60 time.
And then there’s the M. Hang on.
456 HP 4.4 liter twin-turbo V-8, and as mentioned above, ballistic acceleration with 0-60 times around 4 seconds.
But BMW’s M550i xDrive is about so much more than just speed. It’s about confidence. The confidence to be able to burst past that 18-wheeler on a two-lane in mere seconds. The confidence to stop…swerve….and maneuver safely when that deer jumps in front of you on a dark two-lane…or as that on-coming driver on their cell just drifts further and further into your lane. And add to that the confidence of xDrive all-wheel drive.
And then there’s the luxury and safety features that you get with the M.
Heated front and rear leather, heated steering, 19” alloys, wireless charging, soft-close automatic doors, front and rear parking alerts, 360-degree view and all the rest of today’s safety alerts and warnings.
Not that the average M buyer is all that concerned with mileage, but the M550i xDrive is EPA-rated at 16 city and 25 highway. We managed a bit better than that, getting 20-21 in our usual 2-lane + freeway commute, and a surprising 29 MPG for one stretch of well-patrolled 2-lane.
The M550i xDrives start with a window sticker just over 70K. Ours was optioned-up to just under 89K.
If you’re the type who demands the best, BMW’s 5 Series might already be on your list.
But if you’re the type who wants it all….and enjoys letting your inner bad boy out every now and then….give BMW’s M550i xDrive a good look.
