OK….I’ve rolled my eyes more than once at Matthew McConaughey and his Lincoln commercials over the past few years.
And I’m not sure if both he….and a couple of those cars….didn’t deserve it back then.
But hey….this is a new day…and darned if ol’ Matthew might not be on to something now.
Faster, firmer, fiercer seems to have been the steady mantra of most auto writers…always measuring whatever they’re driving against Europe’s absolute finest…..and wishing that they could test drive every vehicle on the Nuremburg Ring. I may be guilty of that bias, too.
So while Cadillac has gone off chasing M’s and AMG’s with their terrific CTS V and CTS V-Sport, Lincoln has gone in a completely different direction. A direction that most American drivers….and I’m sure even more American passengers….seem to prefer.
Comfort and luxury…special features…..and coddled customer care.
But before we go there, let’s be clear. This is not to say that Lincoln’s Continental is a slouch when it comes to performance and handling….especially with its’ 400 HP 3.0 liter twin-turbo. No sir. This combination won’t leave any driver with egg on their face in the stop-light challenge.
But that’s just where this new Continental’s story starts.
Even the entry-level mid $40’s Lincoln Continental comes with enough features to make one feel guilty. Adaptive steering that gives you proper ”feel” regardless of speed, a race-inspired suspension that adjusts to the road 500 times a second, forward and reverse sensing, a Sync 3 system that supports both Apple and Android, sound-deadening acoustic side glass, stop ‘n go cruise control, doors that open and close with little more than a touch, and welcoming lighting…with LED’s in the front, under-door puddle lights, plus interior ambient lighting.
And that’s just half of the story.
Here’s the other half. Customer care. Every Continental comes with courtesy home or office pick-up and delivery of your vehicle for routine service….and a free loaner. You’ll also receive 24 / 7 roadside assistance and complimentary car washes.
As you can probably see, Lincoln’s new Continental is all about ease…making everything about your overall ownership experience as pleasant as possible….both driving as well as the day-to-day details.
Then if you really want to dial it up a few notches, there’s Continental’s “Black Label” editions….America’s answer to the “S” class.
Option up a Black Label and you’ll be in the high $70’s…..but you’ll have an array of features that’ll cradle you and your passengers in hedonistic luxury.
You’ll have that 400 HP engine and 30…..yes….30-way adjustable seating. Opt for the rear seat package and the old term “shotgun” may be forgotten; as your rear seat passengers will have heated and cooled power lumbar reclining seats…and stretch-out space back there.
Inside you’ll find soft venetian leather, alcantara headliner, fine wood or an aluminized fiberglass sliver mesh trim, thematic trim packages like “Vinyard”, “Thoroughbred” and “Rhapsody”….topped off with a dual-panel moonroof.
And your entire buying experience will be orchestrated by only one person….in your own home or office. Plus you’ll have complimentary anytime car-washes…annual detailing….and a VIP membership in a coast-to-coast “Culinary Collection”…..getting you special service at some of America’s top restaurants.
So is Matthew McConaughey on to something after all? Well…..have you seen his wife? All I can say is that he seems to know a good thing when he sees it!
