To say that the 2016 Georgia High School Football Season started with a BANG is an understatement! After an offseason filled with talk about coaching changes, region realignment and transfers, it was time to tee the ball up and kick things off. The Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic provided the backdrop for sensational season-opening performances. I felt that Roswell might be the team to beat this season and they delivered with a 24-7 win over Buford. Don’t feel bad for Buford. By the time November rolls around, they will be in the usual place, rolling into the post season.

Just when I thought nothing could come close to Roswell’s Friday night win, Mill Creek throws a shock into the Georgia Dome with a 34-27 win over 2-time defending state champ Colquitt County. The crew from the Creek didn’t use smoke and mirrors either. Coach Shannon Jarvis Hawks lined up and sent the Packers back to South Georgia with an “L”. Folks, practice is going to be a little rough in Moutrie the next couple days.

If those two games were surprises, then how about a pair of teams making a statement. Last year Brookwood came into the Corky Kell with a new coach and lost to Mill Creek. It was the first game for new coach and Brookwood alum Phillip Jones, and the team looked like it was in a transition period. This weekend the young Broncos looked a year older and a year wiser in their 37-23 win over North Gwinnett. In this day and age of the spread offense it was neat to Dante Black’s 34 carries for 202 yards, making it look like an old school Brookwood win .

The other team making a statement was Hillgrove. Phillip Ironside’s squad served notice that they bear watching in 2016 with a 27-14 win over South Forsyth. Trevon Smith rushed for 122 yards and caught a 95 yard TD toss that sent the Hawks soaring.

The 2016 Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic was played for the final time in the Georgia Dome and looks to move into the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium for 2017. It will make the beginning of a new tradition for the start of the high school season in the Peach State. Speaking of new traditions, we have one for you here at Today we launch the High School Sports Power Hour Top 20. It will be our weekly listing of the top teams in the Metro Atlanta area. Take a look and see where your favorite team is ranked this week.
