When Radio.com spoke with Bieber, he noted that simply the idea that he was working with Skrillex helped to change the way music fans see him: “It shows the world, ‘Hey, if Skrillex is so authentic with his music, and he’s co-signing on Justin Bieber, let’s give him a shot.’ Because I think certain people, especially dudes… I’m a 21 year old man. I do pop music. I don’t know if it’s necessarily ever been ‘cool’ to like Justin Bieber. And I’m not saying, ‘Yeah, dude, come be a ‘Belieber,” I don’t know, really, what that entails.”

Bieber was looking to move on from his boy-band phase — his “Belieber” phase, if you will — and “Where Are U Now?” was the first step in that direction.
