Hollywood, Calif. (CBS Atlanta) – Imagine watching one of your favorite television shows and noticing the host might have cancer. HGTV “Flip or Flop” star Tarek El Moussa is in remission after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer that a viewer noticed, according to PEOPLE magazine.
According to the CDC, thyroid cancer can occur at any age, though most cases happen between 20 and 55 years old. El Moussa and his wife met the registered nurse Ryan Read that spotted the lump in his throat while watching a marathon of his renovation show.READ MORE: Some US Companies Will Cover Travel Costs For Employees Who Need An Abortion
Read wrote into the show and encouraged him to have a biopsy. El Moussa said, “We got the email and I had a bad feeling about it, and just made the first doctor’s appointment we could.” The doctors not only found thyroid cancer, but it had spread to his lymph nodes.
El Moussa had to go under radioactive iodine therapy. He said, “If it wasn’t for TV or her noticing this huge lump on my neck, I would still be moving forward with my life with cancer in my body and never doing anything about it.”READ MORE: Solar Patio Umbrellas Sold At Costco Are Recalled After Multiple Fires
While on set both Read and El Moussa shared a tearful moment of happiness. Read said about her discovery, “You get that gut feeling. Halfway through an episode during a marathon, I saw it. And I stopped the TV, rewound it, watched it again. Watched a few more episodes…”
Although Read admitted she was hesitant on writing the letter, she’s happy she went through with it.MORE NEWS: President Joe Biden Arrives In Europe To Keep Allies United Against Russia
