The Tampa Bay Buccaneers bounced back after blowing a 17-point lead, getting a 31-yard field goal from Connor Barth in overtime to beat the mistake-prone Falcons 23-20 on Sunday.

And as a fan I am disappointed! You should be too!

This was another bad game for the Falcons who moved the ball up and down the field on the Bucs, but had nothing to show for it most of the day because they played undisciplined football! Matt was bad in the 1st half / great in the 2nd. The Falcons sustained some injuries, but I will not make excuses for a team we should have beat.

Jameis Winston threw for only 177 yards and a TD. But in overtime (“Dukesism” ‘when it matters most’) he played like a guy that had been in this situation numerous times.

The story of this game was turnovers. The Falcons turned the ball over 4 times and had a hard time getting out of their own way. They kept themselves from putting points on the board and keeping the Bucs offense off the field with 11 penalties for 124 yards. Terrible!

The Falcons were without William Moore, Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford all out with injuries. But that’s no excuse for the poor brand of football the Falcons displayed on Sunday at home. I guess I was not the only one upset. The Falcons were booed going off the field at halftime for their poor play.

Even though they found a way to come back and make it a game, this time they came up short. This is now a trend with this team. Get down, make mistakes, fight back, more mistakes and poor QB play. The numbers don’t tell the whole story of Matt Ryan’s day who finished 37-45 for 397 yards with 2 TDs and a pick. The poor play of Ryan continued in the 1st half which allowed the Bucs to build a lead on Falcons mistakes.

Having squandered a 24-point edge the previous week at Washington, the Bucs now (3-4) faced another stunning defeat. Which is why Lovie Smith decided to go for it on 4th down in the 4th quarter with 2 mins to play up 7. The Falcons stopped the Bucs and got the ball back, then Matt Ryan tied the game on an 8-yard touchdown pass to Julio Jones with 17 seconds left in regulation.

Jameis Winston led an impressive drive on the first possession of OT, converting three times on third down before the drive finally stalled when he short-hopped a pass in the end zone intended for an open Adam Humphries.

Barth made his third field goal of the game.

The Falcons got the ball but didn’t even make it to midfield. On fourth down, Ryan was heavily pressured by Gerald McCoy and Howard Jones, forcing a desperation pass that wasn’t close to anyone.

Game over!

This team is 6-2 but 0-2 in the NFC South after losing to the Saints and now the Bucs. If they can’t clean up the mistakes, what looked like a playoff run for certain, just a few weeks ago, might continue to fade as the Falcons have played 3 bad games. Last week they won against the Titans.

This week, they did not.

You cannot continue to live on the edge and believe that you’re going to win games in the NFL. Fans should be disappointed in the effort of the 1st half and how undisciplined they looked today.

But the Falcons are going to have to put a full game together and be more consistent if they are going to make a deep run in the playoffs. Period.

On to the 49ers (another bad team right now).
