ATLANTA (CBS Atlanta) — A new study finds that drinking more water can help people lose weight.
Researchers from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom found that drinking 16 ounces of water before eating meals helps lead to more weight loss, according to Time.
“If you look at any sort of weight management programs, they all say drinking lots of water is a really good thing,” study author Dr. Amanda Daley told Time. “We said. ‘Let’s go see what the actual evidence is for this.’”
Researchers conducted the study of 84 obese adults over the course of 12 weeks. One group was told to drink about 16 ounces of water 30 minutes before their meals, while the other group was told to imagine their stomachs were full before eating.
The study reveals that those who drank water before meals lost about three more pounds than those that did not. Time reports that those who drank 16 ounces of water before every meal lost nine pounds during the 12-week time period.
“That’s about what you get from going to Weight Watchers for 12 weeks,” Daley told Time. “That’s a real success.”
Daley added that drinking water a half-hour before eating gives people time to feel fuller.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that nearly 79 million U.S. adults are obese.
