Dekalb County District Attorney Robert James says his office offered Burrell Ellis, “a misdemeanor plea with no jail time, first offender and an offered plea”. Ellis and his attorneys didn’t take the offer. Ellis, the suspended CEO of Dekalb County has been sentenced to 5 years in prison, with 18 months to serve, after being found guilty of corruption and attempted theft by extortion. He’d been accused of strong-arming county vendors into contributing to his political campaign. Ellis attorney Craig Gillen says they disagree with the verdict, and referring to the jury, adds “they didn’t get the full story in terms of the relevance in how the vendors were contacted.”
