We haven’t seen, or heard, much of anything from Hill since the shooting back on May 3, in which he critically wounded a woman at a model home in Lawrenceville. He was arrested three days later and charged with reckless conduct. Hill posted bond and was released. In a statement, He called the shooting ‘a tragic and heartbreaking accident’.

The sheriff of Clayton County was allowed to travel to Israel for a week this month to work as a consultant in the building of a prison. Money from the work there, Hill’s attorney was quoted as saying, would be used to help pay Gwenevere McCord’s medical bills.

During Friday’s memorial service for A. Reginald Eaves, Atlanta’s first Public Safety Commissioner, Sheriff Hill was there. Eaves has been credited with having predicted and pushed, what has been referred to as, “an earthquake that shook the ground”. In 2004 a significant number of black firsts were elected to office in Clayton County, including Sheriff Victor Hill.

Spotted just inside the entrance to Ebenezer Baptist Church, Hill declined to talk to me, giving instead a brisk, “how you doing”, and then speedily walking away.

During the program he addressed Eaves’ family saying, “He was a great man, a great inspiration to me. He was a first. He was before our illustrious chief Eldrin Bell before I became sheriff, and he was an inspiration to us all. Thanks for sharing him with us.”

Meantime, the 43 year old McCord, the real estate agent, that 50 year old Hill is charged with shooting, has apparently corroborated his story that the shooting was an accident, that it happened while they were ‘practicing police tactics’. She was shot in the abdomen and has had to undergo several surgeries.
