When Lesley McSpadden and Michael Brown Sr. visited Atlanta in September 2014, she told me “I’m just doing what I gotta do. I’m standing up for my son like I’ve always stood up for him.” Today, the family is filing a lawsuit against the city of Ferguson, Missouri. This comes after the U.S. Justice Department determined that it would not bring civil rights charges against Darren Wilson, the former Ferguson Police Officer who claimed that he shot Michael Brown in self-defense.
Brown, who was unarmed, was shot and killed on August 19, 2014. His death gave rise to clashes between protesters and police in Ferguson. It also sparked nationwide protests.
