Last year Toyota sent the Avalon to the gym for a total makeover.

What came out is a sleek new fastback four-door…wind-tunnel designed for better highway mileage…with room for five.

And make that “plenty of room for five”.   The Avalon is a big car…full size…with a real ( useable ) back seat and a 16 cubic foot trunk.

But wait…there’s more!

Yes…the changes inside and underneath are perhaps the biggest surprise.

The new Avalon is athletic and muscular.   The ride is firm.  If you were blindfolded and riding in the Avalon, you’d likely think that you were in someone else’s sport sedan.

You can count on inspired performance. The new Avalon comes with a 268 HP V-6 and a six-speed auto….rated at 21 MPG city and 31Highway.   Punch the pedal and hang on.   The “Sport” setting on the transmission is almost unnecessary. Toyota’s new Avalon hauls quite well in “normal”.

All Avalon’s come standard with heated leather seating….and for ’14, all Avalons come with a backup cam, too.  The XLE starts @ $32,150, including destination charges.

The $34,005 XLE Premium adds a moonroof.

$35,810 will get you an XLE ”Touring”…which adds “Sport” and “Economy” settings to the transmission and Blind-Spot and Cross-Traffic monitoring systems.

Finally, the range-topping $40,460 “Limited” will get you perforated heated and ventilated front seating, LED lights, a rear power sunshade and rear-seat climate controls.

Now….for approximately $2,500 more depending upon model, you can have your Avalon in hybrid form… the V-6 for a 4-cylinder + battery power that still gives you good “go” plus another 15 mpg on average.   Almost like MickeyD’s, Toyota makes it easy to have it your way.

Like almost everyone these days, Toyota has made the radio selections part of their Touch screen. To Toyota’s credit, they’ve left a tuning knob….making station selection a bit easier than some.

Obviously, Toyota doesn’t want you to leave “home”.   If you’re ready to step up a bit from a Camry, Toyota’s new Avalon will be a comfortable move for you.
