This day, September 11th, has meant a lot of different things to a lot of different people.

But on September 11th, 2001 it meant to Patrick Daniel Tillman that his path was changed forever. He’d had an amazing career at Arizona State leading the Sun Devil’s to the Rose Bowl his senior year and then with the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL.

On that Tuesday in September however he and his brother Kevin decided to serve their country. They would not enlist until the season was over and he had finished out his contract with the Cardinals. Pat turned down an offer of $3.6 million over three years and Kevin turned down a career in professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians.

In May 2002, they enlisted.

The two served in the initial invasion of Iraq in September 2003 and then returned here to Georgia to Fort Benning and graduated on November 28, 2003.

Pat was then redeployed to Afghanistan. Six months later he was killed by friendly fire.

And the Arizona State Sun Devil’s will now be lead on to the field every time by… Pat tillman. This mural is now at the end of the tunnel leading to the field.

Thank you Pat and Kevin and the Tillman family.

Thank you to ALL of those who serve this country.
