On that Tuesday in September however he and his brother Kevin decided to serve their country. They would not enlist until the season was over and he had finished out his contract with the Cardinals. Pat turned down an offer of $3.6 million over three years and Kevin turned down a career in professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians.

In May 2002, they enlisted.

The two served in the initial invasion of Iraq in September 2003 and then returned here to Georgia to Fort Benning and graduated on November 28, 2003.
