ATLANTA (WAOK)- The city of Atlanta puts the price of Friendship at $15.5 million.
Friendship Baptist Church is located on the south side of the Georgia Dome, and is one of the two churches that the city is asking to relocate in order for the new stadium to be built.
However, Friendship Baptist Church has declined the city’s offer and instead is asking for $24.5 million.
Mayor Kasim Reed spoke publicly for the first time about the negotiations saying that the city cannot afford $24.5 million but has made a second offer of $15.5 million.
If a deal is not made by August the new stadium project will be moved to the north side of the Georgia Dome. Mayor Reed says that he is about 60-70% confident that an agreement will be made within the next 2-3 weeks. He also says that the negotiations are going well.
The city wants the Friendship Baptist property in order to route traffic around the new stadium. The second church being asked to relocate is Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, which sits across the street from Friendship Baptist Church. Negotiations for Mt. Vernon are being handled by the state.
Friendship Baptist Church has a long history in Atlanta. The church has been in existence since 1866. Since its establishment in Atlanta Friendship Baptist Church has only relocated twice, once on the corner of Haynes and Markham Streets, and later to its present location on Northside Drive.
