ATLANTA (WAOK) – This is the 44th annual Earth Day. April 22nd of 1970 is considered by many to mark the birth of the environmental movement in the U.S. The idea for Earth Day was born in the early 1960s amid growing concern of the impact humans have on the environment. Today, millions celebrate Earth Day by working to improve the environment through action. Every year people participate in cleanups, petition drives and organized events.
Here in Atlanta, the City of Atlanta is teaming up with the Environmental Protection Agency for the 2013 Earth Day Cleanup Challenge.
The challenge is a service opportunity aimed at cleaning and beautifying various areas of the city. Organizers say participants will pick up litter and run beautification projects — like tree planting, and landscaping.
