On this week’s HBCU Report the Sports Kings caught up with DeKalb County native Steve Davenport 1st year head coach steve davenport1 The Sports Kings: HBCU Report f. Steve Davenportat Savannah State University to discuss the upcoming season, recruiting, his coaching staff, and how he plans on changing the culture at SSU.

Coach Davenport comes to SSU from the University of Alabama-Birmingham where he served as running backs coach and recruiter. Prior to that Davenport was a highly touted high school football coach in Metro Atlanta, with stops at Rockdale County High, Decatur High (where he won AA Coach of the Year), Redan High School, and his alma mater Southwest DeKalb High where he served offensive coordinator for two seasons guiding the team to a 13-1 record in 1994 (State Semi-Finals) and 14-1 in 1995 (State Championship).

Steve is also a graduate of Georgia Tech, where he was a three year starter and 4 year letterman at wide receiver.
