There is something undeniably sweet and romantic about the idea of an old-fashioned date night. What’s more old-fashioned than a double feature at the drive-in theater? The Starlight Drive-In Theater is Atlanta’s only remaining drive-in movie theater, and it’s a great place to shake up your typical movie date night routine. The theater opened in 1949 and has become an Atlanta landmark, undergoing several renovations over the years, even as recently as 2013 to allow the technology to keep up with the times.
An adult ticket is only $8, which includes a double feature, so it’s also one of the best deals in town. If you want to bring the little ones, kids ages nine and younger get in for only $1 each. Don’t try to hide any stragglers in the trunk though, as you’ll be ejected without a refund if you get caught sneaking in an unpaid guest. Your cars are subject to search, so it’s just not worth it to try to be sneaky.
The theater’s website has a listing of current films and showtimes, so if you’re planning on a romantic evening, just choose the films that aren’t as kid-friendly in order to avoid potential crying jags in the car next to you. Of course, you aren’t obligated to stay for both films, but you may as well get the most bang for your buck. If you’re planning on seeing the first show, it is recommended that you arrive about an hour early, whereas if you’re only in for the second show, plan on getting there 30 minutes before showtime. You are allowed to bring in your own snacks, and there is also a concession stand on site, so you won’t starve. Best of all, you aren’t obligated to pay ridiculous prices for a bucket of soda when you can bring in your own goodies.
If you’re taking your truck to the show, the theater advises that you should probably park with the truck bed facing the screen for best viewing. You can also bring lawn chairs and sit outside to watch the movies, as long as you stay in your space and you don’t block other people’s views. If you prefer not to use your car stereo, you can bring a battery-operated stereo to listen to the film’s soundtrack.
Generally, it can be a relaxing and enjoyable way to spend the evening with your loved one. Of course, there are certain things you should leave at home, as it is a family-friendly environment. Don’t bring in weapons, drugs or alcohol, and no pets are allowed except for service animals with proof of training. The theater is open daily, rain or shine, unless the rain causes serious flooding. Do not sit on top of your car, as this will impede the views of your neighbors. The films are only shown in the evenings, so don’t expect a matinee. There is a good selection of current and nearly-current films, as there are four different double features each night. You may just find yourself coming back again and again to this local favorite.
