Maybe you are an animal lover but you can’t take on any more pets in your home. If you still want to find ways to help out, consider volunteering at an animal shelter or organization. We have selected a few of our favorites and provided information below. Let us know if your group didn’t make the list.

Leftover Pets
610 Barrow Park Drive
Winder, GA 30680
(800) 978-5226
www.leftoverpets.org

Leftover Pets finds the sweetest animals at shelters in Georgia and brings them to the Petsmart in Duluth for adoption. If you would like to help out with the adoption process, contact the group to give a few hours of your time. What could be more satisfying than helping kittens and adult cats find their forever homes? The organization is always looking for foster parents for kitties waiting to be socialized.

Canine Assistants
3160 Francis Road
Milton, GA 30004
(770) 664-7178
www.canineassistants.org

Canine Assistants is a fantastic local group that provides training for service dogs. Whether you want to foster an animal, learn how to help train them or just assist in the grooming and other daily needs, the group would love to have your help. You will get to play with adorable dogs and know that you’re making a real difference in the quality of their life. Contact the group for information on training sessions for volunteers.

Atlanta Humane Society

Atlanta, GA 30318

Naturally, the Atlanta Humane Society is one of the main places to put your love of animals to altruistic use. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and willing to commit six hours per week of their time. If you meet these requirements, contact the group for more information on volunteer training. Atlanta Humane Society needs people to help with socializing and walking the animals, interacting with the public for adoptions and other administrative tasks.

Maybe your volunteer aspirations tend toward even bigger animals. If so, consider the opportunities available at Zoo Atlanta. The zoo is seeking volunteers who are either teen-aged or adult, and there are special programs for families or groups to volunteer together. The Volunteen program is a great opportunity for kids to learn about conservation and animal husbandry, and they are awarded more responsibilities as they prove themselves, leading to a real sense of accomplishment.
