Not every sandwich has to be a BLT or a burger; sometimes you want a yummy lunch without the meat. While not all of these spots are exactly waistline conscious, they can still let the vegetarians among us in on the sandwich party. Sure, you can usually ask a waiter to simply take out the meat from a sandwich, but it’s far preferable to have a dish that the chef has conceived with your needs in mind. From the laid back atmosphere of Victory Sandwich Bar to the more upscale scene at Bocado, there are plenty of places around Atlanta where vegetarians can be part of the sandwich crew.
Victory Sandwich Bar
340 Church St.
Decatur, GA 30030
(404) 377-9300

Decatur’s Victory Sandwich Bar serves innovative flavors in portions that aren’t overwhelming. The “Beeter” is a great vegetarian option, containing beets, white kimchi, and spicy Thai mayo. It’s a lot of flavor for only $4. You will want to get the popcorn of the day to start, as it is always an interesting treat. Grab a booth and settle in for a tasty bite.

Bocado
887 Howell Mill Road NW
Atlanta, GA 30318
(404) 815-1399

Bocado’s lunch menu includes several sandwich options that herbivores will find satisfying. The more adventurous will want to try the roasted cauliflower sandwich with Chinese and Thai eggplant, cilantro and spicy mayo. If you’re in search of more familiar comfort food, there is a grilled cheese with tomato bisque. Either one of these options will fill your sandwich craving without the need to ask the waiter to “hold” a major ingredient.

The General Muir
1540 Ave. Place, Suite B-230
Atlanta, GA 30329
(678) 927-9131

Admittedly, The General Muir is not the first place you’re likely to think of when you wonder where to take your vegetarian friends to lunch, as it is one of the city’s premiere Jewish delis. However, never fear, as there is a vegetarian Reuben sandwich on the menu! Again, beets take center stage, this time rubbed with coriander and smoked, and served with sauerkraut, Russian dressing, and Gruyere cheese. It also serves Batdorf & Bronson locally-roasted coffee, by the cup or the bag.

Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q

Atlanta, GA 30307

Again, a barbecue joint may not be your first thought on where to bring your vegetarian buddy for lunch, but if he likes the flavors of bbq but just not the meat, Fox Bros. has a great sandwich option. The smoked portabello sandwich has a meaty consistency that is satisfying and hearty. It is served on a brioche bun and accompanied by pimento cheese, jalapeno mayo, red onion, lettuce, and tomato, so there will be a bit of a kick. If you still have room, the mac & cheese at Fox Bros. is a tasty side dish.

Highland Bakery

The Highland Bakery is a great lunch spot in Old 4th Ward, with other locations in Midtown Buckhead, GA Tech, and Emory. It is perfect for a break during the work day or for a networking lunch. Vegetarians can enjoy the Italian Vegetable sandwich, with roasted red pepper, zucchini, squash, and mushrooms, drizzled with red pepper pesto and topped with fresh basil and tomato, all on ciabatta bread. It’s one of the more savory and satisfying veggie sandwiches in Atlanta.
