It’s no secret anymore, Atlanta is one of the best music cities in the world. With a rich history that goes back over 100 years with gospel choirs and folk music, music producers from all genres now have taken up residence in Atlanta to work with the talent that is found in the South. Atlanta may be the epicenter of urban and rap music, but R&B, jazz, rock and country artists also call Atlanta home. Some famous group and performers make the trip annually to Atlanta to work with these experienced producers to cut their next album or get advice. Here are the some of the top music producers that call Atlanta home.
When you think about the current music scene in Atlanta, the talk always begins with Jermaine Dupri. The North Carolina native now lives in Alpharetta and he’s an American success story. He’s worked with everyone from Janet Jackson to Mariah Carey along with Usher and Nelly. Dupri has become the standard all music producers will be judged against in this country, not only in hip hop, but across all genres. He’s a staple of the Atlanta community and he gives back with his charity work and foundation. (No wonder Jay-Z, Monica, Lil Jon, Usher, Carey and more showed up for his So So Def Records 20th Anniversary concert).
Matt Still has seen it all in the music business. Still has worked with the likes of Elton John, Outkast, Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder. Still works with musical talent all over the world, but he calls Atlanta home and he knows what a rich base of talent resides in the South. He’s known as one of the brightest music producers in the business and he’s always on the lookout to work with new talent.
Simon Horrocks may be known by many as the drummer and a longtime member of the roots-rock band, The Freddy Jones Band, but he also is one of the founders of Affix Music. Being a performer, Horrocks knows what it takes to reach the charts and to have a long career in the music business. He puts all of his music knowledge to work behind the scenes at Affix working with talent, especially in the urban genre. Affix has worked with Grammy-winning artist Ciara and many more. Horrocks is all about the independent artist and works each day helping urban artists get their music to the masses.
Writing music and helping young musicians is what Carl Shackleton is all about. He brings his decades of experience to the table and he’s worked with everyone in Atlanta and various other artists in rap, hip hop, R&B and pop. He’s scored numerous movie soundtracks throughout the years and also can help musicians on the business side of things. When musicians have questions, Shackleton is always available to help them find the answers.
Founded by the legendary producer Bill Lowery, Southern Tracks is the Atlanta home for all of the top acts in the music business when they need to record. Do the names Bruce Spingsteen, Train, Aerosmith and Sugarland sound familiar? They all use Southern Tracks with Georgia Music Hall of Fame member Mike Clark’s experience at their disposal. Clark and Southern Tracks have set the standard for recording studios and music production in Atlanta for years. It’s helped make Atlanta the music hub that it is today.
