With Father’s Day just around the corner, it’s a great time for kids of all ages to think of ways to celebrate their beloved patriarch of the family. Gone are the days of another gift-wrapped tie to add to the collection or a singing fish to hang on his wall. Today’s dad wants the gift of experiences. From sporting events and live concerts to super cool venues and fun excursions, Atlanta is filled to the brim with delightful dad-inspired distractions. It’s easy to plan a father-focused foray into the city – geared toward making the big guy feel special 365 days a year.

Turner Field

The classic image of a father playing catch with his child is forever tied to America’s long-standing love affair with the game of baseball. For generations, dad has packed up the car and made his way to the ballpark to load family members up with popcorn, peanuts and memorabilia. His well-worn baseball mitt is at the ready in hopes of catching a fly ball. With terrific match-ups coming up that include the Atlanta Braves vs. the San Francisco Giants (June 14-16), the New York Mets (June 17-20) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (June 28-30), dad is certain to love his gift of tickets to a game at Turner Field.

If dad still has a slew of concert t-shirts from his youth folded neatly in his dresser drawers, chances are very good that he would appreciate tickets to see one of his favorite bands. Boasting a rock-solid lineup of musical guests this summer – including Hank Williams Jr. & Gregg Allman, Phish, Robert Plant, The Black Crowes, Keith Urban, Peter Frampton and more – Verizon Amphitheatre in Alpharetta is one of Atlanta’s superlative venues for a concert under the stars. The Amphitheatre offers general admission seating on the lawn as well as reserved seating near the stage.

An excellent way to burn rubber while burning off some steam, Andretti Indoor Karting & Games has a little something for every kind of dad. Dads who have a “need for speed” (a la “Top Gun”) will enjoy Andretti’s high-speed super carts, while old school gamer dads may while away the majority of their visit in the expansive arcade. Adventure-seeking fathers will love the cosmic rock wall, extreme ropes course and zip line, while fathers with a funny bone will enjoy having a few laughs at Bonkerz Comedy Club. Dads who have a penchant for putting the pedal to the metal are likely to enjoy a day at the races at North Georgia’s Road Atlanta. The National Auto Sports Association will hit the track with high-performance street cars on June 14 through 16, and the Sports Car Club of America is where the rubber meets the road on July 13 through 14. If dad fancies himself as a bit of an aspiring racer, he may want to take part in the MVP Track Time event on June 22 through 23, when guests are invited to drive their track-worthy high-performance vehicles on the track at high speeds.

On behalf of fathers who have the blood of a fisherman coursing through their veins, an afternoon at Andy’s Trout Farm will definitely do him some good. Dads with small children to whom they wish to pass on their passion might enjoy fishing in the small pond, stocked with Rainbow Trout. For more astute anglers, the three-acre lake is the place to be. Andy’s Trout Farm has a number of one- and two-bedroom cabins for families who want to make a Great Smoky Mountains weekend of it.
