Former Atlanta City Official Punished for Bribe Scandal

Author: Julien Virgin

Federal prosecutors have sentenced a former Atlanta city official to prison for taking bribes in exchange for city contracts.

Former chief of procurement for the city of Atlanta, Adam Smith was sentenced to more than a year in prison Tuesday morning.

Prosecutors found that Smith had taken envelopes of cash from contractors over 40 times within a span of two years, amounting to over 44,000 dollars.

Smith, worked with the city for 14 years under Mayor Shirley Frankin and Mayor Kasim Reed, before being fired once allegations surfaced.

He claims that he “let his guard down” when taking bribes and asked the judge for mercy during the emotional sentencing.

He was facing up to 27 months in prison but was given less time because of his corporation with the FBI.
