TEXAS: Tom Herman went bust in his debut as head coach with Texas. The ‘Horns were penalized for 117 yards, ran for only 98 and got torched by multiple Maryland QBs in giving up 51 points in a home loss.
UNLV: There has been talk about Vegas possibly dropping football. Guess that’s happened. The Rebels set a new record; largest point spread favorite to lose. UNLV was favored by 45 points but lost by three at home to Howard.
FLORIDA’S QUARTERBACKS: And…. again. Felipe Franks and Malik Zaire combined to lead a Gators offense that generated only 192 total yards and three points in a stinging loss to Michigan. Granted, the Gators were shorthanded with their leading rusher and receiver both suspended. But the lack of any attack is a serious concern.
ALABAMA: The Tide took everything the No. 3 team in the nation had and still pounded the Seminoles when the game was on the line. Alabama should be unanimous in the top spot in the new poll.
JAKE FROMM: The highly touted freshman surely hoped he might play in Georgia’s opener, just not as early as he was forced to because of a knee injury to starter Jacob Eason. Fromm put a spark in the offense, was efficient throwing the ball and gave Dawgs fans a reason to debate which player might be a better fit to run the club.
CAYLIN NEWTON: Cam’s little brother was passed over by the big schools. The true freshman out of Grady High School threw for 140 yards, ran for a whopping 190 more and accounted for three TDs in Howard’s upset of UNLV.
JAKE OLSON: He made one snap… On an extra point… At the end of USC’s 49-31 win over Western Michigan. The fact that he has been totally blind since Age 12 and that the snap was top quality perfect makes Olson, by far, the biggest winner in football this season. Let’s hope he gets a few more chances to make a play this year.
