When Atlanta landed its MLS expansion side and began play in 2017, Orlando City was the first thought of a natural geographic rival for the Five Stripes.
Atlanta United seems to be taking the rivalry very seriously.
The Five Stripes get back into action July 21. Team president Darren Eales took to Twitter to show progress in the construction of the future Atlanta United home, all while poking the Orlando City bear.
Social media isn’t the only place this new MLS rivalry has shown up. Apparently old school tactics have been employed with a billboard in Orlando just days before the match, announcing the impending Five Stripes arrival.
Atlanta United has sold out every home soccer match this season in Bobby Dodd Stadium. The Five Stripes frenzy is real. As has been shown this week by Eales on Twitter and some clever outdoor advertising, the expansion side has a strong trash talking game too.
