While Cinco de Mayo may have begun as a celebration of a Mexican military victory in the mid-1800s, it has morphed into a general celebration of Mexican and Latin American culture. As one of the biggest hubs of Hispanic culture in the South, Atlanta offers plenty of opportunity to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in style. Whether you want to celebrate with food, drinks, or a festival, these five destinations are sure to make your Cinco de Mayo weekend a memorable one.

Tin Lizzy’s Cantina is an award winning restaurant at any time of the year. But on Cinco de Mayo, their wide ranging menu of what they call “Flex Mex” cuisine, which includes a number of choices in sauces and tortillas for many menu items, is even more in demand. But the real reason to make Tin Lizzy’s your Cinco de Mayo destination is their “Drinko de Mayo” celebration, which features their menu of over a dozen types of margaritas and a generalized party atmosphere.

If you’re looking for a more upscale experience on Cinco de Mayo, look no further than Agave. Focusing on Southwestern and Tex-Mex cuisine, Agave puts a gourmet spin on Mexican restaurant favorites. Dishes like their Barbacoa & Chorizo Chile Taco and Spicy Tequila Anejo Shrimp will make you forget all about those chain restaurants. But the real sell of Agave is in the name, agave being the main ingredient in tequila. Agave features a tequila bar big enough to rival most restaurants’ wine lists, with options ranging from the reasonable to the more luxurious reserve options. Agave also features a good list of Mexican beers, along with the usual domestic and import options.
