COWETA COUNTY, GA- A Veteran The Coweta County Fire who lost his life Thursday is being remembered by firefighters and his community.
Michael Norton, 38, was a firefighter and paramedic who had been with the department for 17 years. In the early morning hours of March 1, Norton responded to a structure fire in East Newnan. Firefighters battled the blaze until leaving the scene around 6:30 a.m., according to Chief Pat Wilson.
He then went off duty around 8 a.m. and spent some time on his part-time job in a family business.
Just before midnight, Norton’s wife found him unresponsive in their home. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
On Thursday, Wilson received calls of support from fire departments across the country. Norton’s passing marks the 18th reported firefighter fatality in the United States this year, according to the United States Fire Administration.
The nature and cause of the fatal injury has not been determined. Funeral arrangements are pending. Norton leaves behind his wife, Britney, and daughter, Braelinn.
