Luxury, performance and technology….Audi seems to have the big three bases pretty well covered. From there, it just becomes a matter of “what size do you want it in?”
If your answer is a “right-sized 4-door”, Audi’s completely re-designed 2017 A4 might be worth a good look.
While this year’s A4 may look similar to last year’s model, that’s where the similarity ends.
For one, it’s bigger than the ’16….getting your rear-seat passengers a bit more much-needed leg room.
And just about everything under that new skin is new, too. Audi’s 190 HP four is still standard, but now you’ve got a 252HP turbo to choose from, too. This is the same engine that’s standard on Audi’s larger A6, so expect superb acceleration in the smaller and lighter A4. Audi says it’ll do Zero – 60 in roughly 6 seconds.
Another big change is the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic…..bringing back the “feel” that the last A4’s continuously-variable transmission just didn’t have.
And on the “tech” front, Audi offers “pre-sense” on every A4. Pre-sense is a computer-controlled system that senses trouble….and not only applies braking, but also deploys your airbags and closes your sunroof if it senses that a collision is unavoidable. Yes, it’s “Big Brother”, but yes…..it’s a great safety feature.
While it might be possible to find an “entry-level” $40K Audi A4, you’ll have a lot more fun if you ante-up the extra $10 – $14,000 and go all-in.
Our test A4 2.0T quattro S tronic had the big engine, all-wheel-drive, heated and cooled ventilated leather front seats and heated rears, 18’ alloys, 3D Bang and Olufsen surround-sound, parking assist with a “top view” camera, a heads-up display showing your speed along with your road’s posted speed limit, adjustable ambient interior lighting, heated steering wheel, and just about every electronic warning system on the market today.
Mileage is rated at 24 city and 31 Hwy. We beat that 31figure a couple of times…which is darned impressive mileage for a mid-sized performance vehicle.
If you heard good things about the previous Audi A4, you’ll hear more good things about the ’17. It’s just that much better in all the ways that count.
