After a scoreless first quarter dominated by the two defenses, the Falcons offense found its footing in the second quarter putting up touchdowns on back-to-back drives. However, it was the defense that came up with arguably the two biggest plays of the first half.

First, it was Deion Jones stripping LeGarrette Blount with the Patriots driving in Atlanta territory. That turnover set up the Falcons first scoring drive that ended with a Devonta Freeman touchdown.

Later in the second quarter after the Falcons had scored again, the Patriots once again had driven deep into Falcons territory. The drive would end once again in a turnover with Falcons cornerback Robert Alford picking off a Brady pass intended for Danny Amendola and returning it 82 yards for a score to give Atlanta a 21-0 lead.
