GWINNETT COUNTY,GA- A Gwinnnett county jury continued a second day of deliberations Friday in the case of a couple accused of keeping their son locked in a room for eighteen months.
Recardo Wimbush, a former Georgia Tech football player, and his wife, Therian, are accused of cruelty to children and false imprisonment. The couple has been charged with seven counts and represented themselves in the trial.
Back in March 2015, the child abuse case got underway with Therian Wimbush defending her decisions as a mother. State authorities were there in Gwinnett County Juvenile Court to permanently take custody of her 10 children. The children have been in foster care since she and her husband were arrested for felony child abuse in June. They remained in jail in Gwinnett with no contact with their children after prosecutors argued they might influence their testimony.
The criminal charges against her and husband Recardo Wimbush, came after allegations they imprisoned their oldest child — now 14 — in the basement of their Buford home as punishment. The state division of family and children services contends the Wimbushes’ parenting is so depraved that they should lose custody of all their kids. The custody hearing was not part of the criminal charges.
The trial is expected to take two weeks.
