Auto Nsider Review: 2017 Jaguar F-Pace 35t R-Sport

Around 50 years ago, Janis Joplin sang about needing a Mercedes Benz….because all her friends drove Porsches.

Actually, Janis DID have a Porsche…a wildly painted psychedelic 356 that just sold for $1,760,000….but that’s another story.

And today your upwardly-mobile friends are probably still driving Porsches and Mercedes….along with BMWs, Audis, Lexus, Land Rovers and the occasional Infiniti, Cadillac and Lincoln.

So…..want to stand out a bit….like Janis did years ago?

Jaguar is here to help ya’ then.

You’ll find Jaguars in your friendly neighborhood Land Rover store…..but unlike Land Rover’s husky, beefy, brick-on-wheels shape, Jag’s F-Pace…like all good Jaguars, has curves in all the right places.

The F-Pace is Jaguar’s first SUV, and while perhaps late to the party, Jag took the time to do a whole lotta’ things right with this vehicle.

Let’s start with the first surprise…..price.

You can actually get into one of the sexiest looking SUVs on the road for less than $42,000.  Another surprise:   That 42K will put you in a diesel….an engine that many manufacturers charge you more for.

The 4-cylinder diesel puts our 180 HP and a healthy 318 ft lbs of torque.   Moving away from a stop light shouldn’t be a problem in this diesel.   Jag claims a 129 MPH top-end and a 0-to-60 time of just a hair over 8 seconds…..all the while delivering 26 city MPG and 33 on the road.   Who would have thought of a Jaguar SUV as an economy vehicle?

One more surprise:    Every Jag F-Pace comes standard with All-Wheel-Drive….again, an “extra” on most vehicles.

We had the 3.0, 340 HP Supercharged six, however, in our test vehicle….good for a claimed 150+ MPH and only 5.4 seconds to 60.   It’s only $1,400 more for the six, so if “GO” is high on your wish list, the Supercharged six might light your candle a bit more brightly.

While the six is rated at 18 MPG city and 23 HWY, we got 25 on the road running with the flow of traffic…..which might just have been a bit above posted limits.

And again, in the finest of Jaguar traditions, the Supercharged six puts our just a little bit more “growl” than you’ll find in most of it’s competitors.   Roll the windows down every now and then and just enjoy the sound!

Handling, “feel”, and braking are all what you’d expect from a high-performance “Sport” vehicle.

All F-Paces are 5-seaters… third row is offered….but for those five, you’ll find ample room and comfort and carrying ability.

As with most vehicles, you can option-up your F-Pace $20,000 or so….opting for 20’s instead of the standard 18” alloys….380 horses in case 340 wasn’t enough….and adding all the back-up cams, heated seats and steering, lane-keeping and blind-spot monitors, panoramic sunroofs and auto emergency braking that so many of us have come to expect.

Interestingly, every level of trim is available with either the diesel or the six….strictly your call as to how you want to roll.

And it’s all running through an 8-speed auto with a “Sport” selection.   But with the Jaguar F-Pace, “Sport” is kind of redundant, as it seems to be already baked into the company’s gene pool.
