As the calendar changes from September to October the high school fall sports schedule changes as well. The pace will quicken as the spotlight looks toward the post season. In fact, the playoffs are already underway for Volleyball and Softball.
At the same time we are now past the midway point of the high school football season. There are some teams that have not had a bye week and have played 7 games, but now things get serious. Since the season began, football teams from the metro Atlanta area have faced opponents from as far away as Colorado. By this weekend almost all of the games that involve crossing state lines or long bus rides to the opposite end of the state should be over.
It’s that time… Region Time! These are the games that matter and after this weekend practically every team in the metro area should have played at least one. These are the games that count if you want to play in the second season. Lose one and your team should still get in. Lose two region games and are on the bubble. If you lose three region games chances are you will be on the outside looking in or facing the dreaded coin toss to see who gets to hit the road to face a number 1 seed. OUCH !!
That said, we will be keeping an eye on some unbeaten teams in our High School Sports Power Hour Top 20 Poll. This week we welcome some new faces with unblemished records. Unbeaten Harrison is ranked 18 in this week’s countdown and will face region rival Sprayberry this week. Another new face is Alexander. Last week the Cougars beat Northgate and will host Tri-Cities this week.
But without a doubt the main event this week in the metro area is Lassiter at Roswell, both are 5-0 . The Trojans are 11 this week, and the Hornets are holding steady at 2, with the winner earning the region drivers seat.
The Mill Creek Hawks are still in the top spot with a 6-0 mark and will be hosting Discovery this week.
