Auto Nsider Review: 2016 VW Beetle Dune 1.8T

Remember when the first “New Beetles” hit the streets years ago?

People stopped, stared and pointed.

VW’s new “Dune” is kinda’ like that.

It’s just a slightly taller Beetle with a little wider track, but it’s a real attention-getter….especially in “Sandstorm Metallic Yellow” with its’ silver / grey seats with yellow piping.

And in a world where there’s usually “chick cars” and “guy cars”, men and women alike seemed to get a kick out of the Dune.

It’s got dune buggy appeal, if not true off-road innards.

“Go” comes from VW’s proven 170 HP, 1.8 liter turbo four and a six-speed auto….delivering spirited performance along with 25 city and 34 highway MPGs…on regular.

Handling is typical VW, which is to say nimble and well-controlled.   The dune is a responsive delight in city traffic…and in “Sandstorm Metallic Yellow”, easy to spot in a parking lot, too.

Most of VW’s latest connectivity is included on the Dune including “Car-Net” smartphone integration, rear-view cam and park / distance alerts.

You’ll also get special 18” alloys, heated front seats and heated folding side mirrors.

In short, in addition to its’ fun-to-drive factor, VW’s Dune will probably get you more attention than almost any other 25 thousand dollar ride out there.
