Lightning , Upsets, And Unfinished Business Highlight Week 2 Of High School Football

Nature’s light show provided the backdrop for high school football around the Metro Atlanta area last Friday night. It brought a different meaning to the term Friday Night Lights, as it proved to be a show stopper and caused some long evenings. With so many non-region games being played some coaches were looking at their wrist watches more than the stadium clock. When lightning is detected near the stadium where a game is being played, there is an automatic 30-minute delay. That delay can be extended for as long as the lightning continues in the area. In some cases, it brought the time limit for the resumption of play in a non-region game into play.

Grady’s 14-10 win over Woodward Academy came with time still left on the clock and some frowns on the faces of War Eagle fans. Even more, frowns could be found in the stands at the Westlake versus Langston Hughes game. The backyard rivalry that has been a region showdown , was reduced to a non-region affair after reclassification . Bad weather and poor conduct in the stands halted play with the Panthers holding a 10-9 lead over the Lions.

Give North Hall credit for waiting out the lightning delay to leave Flowery branch with a 21-20 and a (2-0) start to the 2016 season.

Then there was the Newton versus Eastside game. The battle of county rivals started, stopped and started again to a 41-41 tie. Since it was a non-region contest and it was getting late, the coaches agreed to walk away with a draw. Maybe coaches were tired and just didn’t want to watch their teams play anymore , but I think the coaches might have had an early Saturday morning tee time, leaving stands filled with unsatisfied customers.

Speaking of unsatisfied customers, that much anticipated IMG versus Grayson all-star fest didn’t really live up to the hype. The game had been shrouded in controversy with GHSA banning the Florida-based boarding school from future games against Georgia opponents . Grayson, who was ranked above IMG in some national polls lost 26-7. This week The Rams are number 5 in our High School Power Hour Top 20. Let’s see how Grayson regroups this week when they face a McEachern team that is ranked number 4 this week.

The rest of the top 5 has Cartersville at 3, Roswell at 2, and Mill Creek hanging in the top spot after a 32- 7 win over Stephenson .
