Falcons Drive Of The Week: Schaub’s Bomb Sets Up Score

With Atlanta’s 23-17 win over Washington Thursday, the Falcons churned 359 yards (out-gaining the Redskins by 125 yards) and scored points on four of their 11 possessions — a touchdown and three field goals.

J.D. McKissic scored a second touchdown, but it wasn’t during a Falcons possession as he returned the opening kickoff of the second half 101 yards for a score. In all, Atlanta made it into Washington’s red zone three times and scored on all three chances — two field goals and a touchdown.

Each week we’ll select a Falcons Drive of the Game, and Thursday’s came on a short three-play possession. But instead of a dreaded three-and-out, Atlanta needed only three plays to punch the football into the end zone in the second quarter.

Atlanta traveled 72 yards in just 1:23 with most of the field churned on the first play of the drive.

Play 1: Second Quarter — 9:07 Remaining — Score Tied at 3

  • Drive Began: Atlanta’s 28
  • Package: 12 Personnel (one RB, two tight ends)

While technically 12 personnel, one of the tight ends in this package was offensive tackle Tom Compton, giving the Falcons six linemen. That left only two receivers (Justin Hardy and Aldrick Robinson), one tight end (Joshua Perkins) and one running back (Brandon Wilds) as weapons for quarterback Matt Schuab.

The Falcons, however, only needed one weapon for Schaub to target.

While Hardy (blue line) dragged across the field at a medium depth Perkins (green line) feigned a blocking assignment then released into the flat on the left side. Wilds stayed back to protect Schaub. Robinson (red line) blew past Quinton Dunbar before the Washington cornerback realized just how fast Robinson could run.

With the blockers moving right, Schaub rolled out by himself to the left and unloaded a bomb toward Robinson.

Schaub connected with Robinson for 68 yards. The play looked like Schaub under-threw the route, but Robinson said after the game that he outran Schaub and took the fall for having to stop and come back to the ball.

Play 2: Second Quarter — 8:23 Remaining — Score Tied at 3

  • Drive Began: Washington’s 4
  • Package: 12 Personnel (one RB, two tight ends)

The Falcons sent Robinson out wide to the left and Hardy to the right. Both ran routes deep into the back of the end zone to help clear space for the running play.

Wilds took the handoff and hit the outside gap to the right of Compton and rookie Wes Schweitzer, who both sealed their opponents toward the left side. Rookie tight end Austin Hooper pushed Trent Murphy wide to the right away from Wilds.

Wilds was met with contact at the line of scrimmage, but fought hard to gain three yards to the 1-yard line.

Play 3: Second Quarter — 7:42 Remaining — Score Tied at 3

  • Drive Began: Washington’s 1
  • Package: 23 “Jumbo” Personnel (two RBs, three tight ends)

Wilds scored from 1 yard out on this smashmouth play. The right side of the offensive line pushed its assignments back and rookie fullback Will Ratelle executed a stellar block on linebacker Houston Bates to help Wilds get into the end zone.

Perkins also helped with a perfect block on linebacker Perry Riley to keep him deep in the end zone and away from being able to make a play on Wilds.

After that three-play scoring drive, the Falcons were up 10-3 and never relinquished the lead.
