Schiavone: ‘When it comes to sports, this is what I believe.’

During the promotion of his new HBO show,  “Any Given Wednesday,”  Bill Simmons discussed, briefly, what he believes.  It got me thinking (as does anything Simmons writes or says) about what I believe, when it comes to sports.

As a fan, I’m sure you have an unofficial list as well.  Things you feel strongly about when it comes to your favorite teams or favorite leagues.  I think that is one of the things that sets us apart from the general populace.  It is our passion for the game, whether we played it professionally (or still do), or played for high school or college ambition, or the fun of it, like yours truly.

So, here’s my list.  Like all lists, it is ever-changing.  What’s on your list?  Do you agree or disagree?

I believe,

—that soccer is boring as hell
—that Ichiro is the best hitter I’ve ever seen
—that Mike Foltynewicz is one of the best young pitchers in the game
—that the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is way overblown
—that in his prime, Kobe Bryant was the best shooter I’ve ever seen
—that Vince Scully should get the Medal of Freedom
—that Hank Aaron should also get the Medal of Freedom
—that there is too much college basketball on television

—that an episode of Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling with Bob Caudle is better than any wrestling program on TV today
—that my Washington Redskins will never win another Super Bowl in my lifetime
—that the DH should be either in both leagues or not at all
—that Bryce Harper is the best player in baseball
—that Alex Rodriguez is really a good guy (actually, I know him.  So this is true)
—that there is a lack of good writers when it comes to commercials on television
—that “The West Wing” is the best show ever on TV
—that “Daredevil” on Netflix is a close second
—that “Game of Thrones” on HBO is a close third
—that I’ve drifted away from sports on this list, sorry
—that overall the SEC has the best and worst fans in sports
—that there is nothing better than a Saturday afternoon of college football
—that Muhammad Ali will always be the greatest boxer ever
—that owners’ constant tinkering with the game is hurting baseball
—that the World Series was better when it was not on Fox
—that Doris Burke does a good job at courtside in NBA games

—that Sportscenter has gotten too silly
—that Jim Powell is one of the best baseball play by play announcers in the business
—that Joe Tait, of the Cleveland Cavaliers (ret.), is the best radio play by play announcer of all time
—that during the final three years, I became a terrible wrestling announcer
—that I am glad that phase of my life is over
—that opinions on Twitter are way overrated
—that the NBA season has been stretched out too long (I don’t like basketball in June, for some reason)
—that I agree with Simmons, billionare owners should build their own damn stadiums
—that Bill Simmons is a pompass ass, but a great writer
—that Aaron Rodgers is still the best quaterback in the NFL
—that baseball, at 162 games, is perfect
—that replay reviews by referees in college basketball is hurting the game
—that the college basketball regular season is meaningless
—that the NFL should take care of all it’s athletes, PAST and present
—that Cubs fans are the most obnoxious in sports
—that the Cleveland Indians are, right now, the best team in baseball
—that Brian Snitker should get a chance to manage the Braves in 2017
—that Julio Teheran should not be traded

—that the Little League World Series should not be televised
—that unfortunatley, sponsor patches will eventually be worn on uniforms in the U.S.
—that NASCAR has done a great job of alienating the fans in the south and thus is not what it used to be
—that AAU Basketball is the most corrupt organization in sports
—that Mark Fox’s best years at UGA are still to come
—that Jacob Eason will be the starting quarterback at UGA this season
—that Kirby Smart will take a lot of heat if Eason is not

Yes, I could go on and on and on.  You could, too.  The fact is, I am glad that sports has become a way of life with me and I would not change it for the world.  That I believe most of all.
