CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — School systems ended classes early and delayed the start of the next day’s schedule as a combination of steady rain and plummeting temperatures in North Carolina set the stage for hazardous driving conditions.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory from the North Carolina coast westward to the Triad effective until noon Friday. A winter weather advisory is also in effect for the mountains on the Tennessee border.

Forecasters called for a wintry mix of sleet, snow and freezing rain Thursday night, While no significant accumulations were expected, the precipitation combined with temperature dropping into the 20s raised the possibility of black ice on roadways overnight as well as on Friday. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing until late Friday morning, keeping travel conditions treacherous.
