ATLANTA (WAOK) – Each day of falling gas prices means saving big bucks at Atlanta city hall. The official in charge of the city’s four thousands cars and trucks estimates the government has saved nearly one million dollars.
The bulk of those savings coming in the second half of 2014, when week-by-week the per gallon price got shaved a few cents.
Right now, city hall is already paying below two dollars a gallon for regular. The city can purchase at just a few cents above wholesale.
Commissioner Richard Mendoza says the way the city is buying gasoline adds to the bottom line. He says the department used to make longer term buys to lock in a price. That’s not a good deal now. The city is purchasing fuel on a weekly basis.
