Atlanta (WAOK)-The bricks are falling at what once was Friendship Baptist Church. The building is in the process of being torn down to make way for the Falcons new one billion dollar retractable roof stadium.
Friendship Baptist church has been located on the corner of Northside Drive and MLK Jr in downtown Atlanta for over 100 years.
“Fifty thousand Atlanta Public School children should have been able to come see this church and see the history of Maynard Jackson the first African American Mayor of any Southern U.S. city,” said Activist Molly Readwoo who watched the cranes take down part of the building on Monday.
Friendship Baptist was paid $19.5 million to move. Mt. Vernon Baptist Church which stood across the street from Friendship was paid over $14 million to move its sanctuary. The new Falcons stadium is expected to be ready by 2017.
