Herzliya, Israel (CBS Atlanta) — Nice girls finish first.
At least that what a new study published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin says.
Live Science reports the study, which found that men tend to be more sexually attracted to women who are responsive and show interest in them during a date.
Women who were responsive during a first date were rated higher on the qualities of femininity and sexual attractiveness by men. In addition, the study also found that men were much more interested in beginning a long-term relationship with these same responsive women.
Nonresponsive women ranked low in the study.
The results were the exact opposite when the study looked at women’s attraction to responsive men. Women tend to be less attracted to men who are more responsive during a date.
“We wanted to understand the reasons for these gender differences,” said lead researcher Gurit Birnbaum who is also an associate professor of psychology at the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya in Israel.
Birnbaum and his team conducted three experiments to rate attractiveness. In each experiment, 80-161 students talked to another student of the opposite gender about a difficult experience in life, such as failing an exam while the other student listened and responded.
Each student then rated their partner on scales of responsiveness, attractiveness, and masculinity or femininity at the end of each experiment.
“I didn’t know until this [journal] article that men perceive responsive women not only as feminine, but also as sexually arousing,” Eli Finkel, a professor of psychology at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois told Live Science in an email. “I could have imagined a different set of results in which men found such women feminine, but then viewed them as dainty or less sexually desirable. Birnbaum and colleagues showed that the opposite is true.”
While the results are interesting and surprising, there is no conclusive evidence giving a reason why women find more responsive men less attractive.
