Officer Dragged By Vehicle, Suspect Dead
ADAIRSVILLE, Ga. (AP) — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into a shooting involving a police officer in northwest Georgia that left one man dead.
The GBI said in a statement that an Adairsville police officer stopped a suspicious vehicle around 12:40 a.m. Tuesday at an entrance to Interstate 75 in Adairsville. Authorities say the driver, 29-year-old Charles Leon Johnson II, was wanted on a simple battery charge.
The GBI said that when the officer tried to arrest Johnson, he tried to flee in his vehicle, dragging the officer along the road. Authorities say the officer fired once at Johnson, killing him.
The GBI said the officer was treated for injuries that didn’t require hospitalization.
Adairsville police asked the GBI to investigate the case.
Adairsville is about 60 miles northwest of Atlanta.
