ATLANTA (CBS Atlanta) — Drop the wine!
At least that’s the advice a new study published in the July 11 issue of “BMJ” is giving drinkers.
Health Day reports on the study whose results say not drinking at all is always a healthier option than light drinking; a stark contradiction to past research.
In the study, researchers analyzed more than 50 other studies related to drinking habits and it’s health benefits in more than 260,000 people.
What they found was that those who possessed a gene tied to lower alcohol consumption generally had healthier hearts.
More specifically, those with the gene also had lower blood pressure, a lower body-mass index, and a 10 percent lower risk of heart disease.
“While the damaging effects of heavy alcohol consumption on the heart are well-established, for the last decades we’ve often heard of reports of the potential health benefits of light-to-moderate drinking,” said study senior author Juan Casas, a professor of epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
The studies that Casas is talking about have reported everything from how red wine helps the heart to how alcohol consumption may lengthen your lifespan.
However this new study seems to undermine the others, stating that alcohol consumption, even light-to-moderate, may not be so good for you after all.
“In our study, we saw a link between a reduced consumption of alcohol and improved cardiovascular health, regardless of whether the individual was a light, moderate or heavy drinker,” Casas went on to say.
Of course, this is only a link with no validity of cause-and-effect.
For its part, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention only has information related to excessive drinking listed on its site with the jury still being out on the benefits of light-to-moderate drinking.
