TSA Finds 2 Guns In Atlanta Airport Screenings

ATLANTA (AP) — The Transportation Security Administration says its screeners found loaded guns in carry-on bags of two passengers trying to board flights at Atlanta’s airport — the first time the agency has detected firearms at the airport since Georgia’s new law relaxing carrying restrictions took effect last week.

The TSA said both weapons — a .40-caliber handgun and a .22-caliber revolver — were found at security checkpoints three hours apart Wednesday at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Police interviewed and released both passengers, but the TSA said each will likely be assessed a federal civil penalty of $3,000 minimum.

Since July 1, Georgia law allows licensed gun owners to legally carry weapons in unrestricted areas of airports. The TSA said Atlanta screenings turned up nearly 50 guns this year before the law took effect.
