ATLANTA (CBS Atlanta) – According to recent study, beer goggles really do exist.

The term is usually defined as a phenomenon in which one’s consumption of alcohol makes physically unattractive people appear beautiful.

Researchers from the University of Bristol, located in the United Kingdom, had volunteers drink and then look at pictures of men, women, and landscapes.

The researchers set out to local pubs and invited everyone to participate. One group would drink alcoholic beverages and another would drink non-alcoholic beverages.

They found that the people who drank alcoholic beverages found the pictures more attractive.

“It’s a bit of fun, but there is a serious message,” Olivia Maynard, a researcher with this experiment told the Daily Mail. “If alcohol does change perceptions of attractiveness then that could be a factor in the kind of risky behavior you see when people are drunk, such as unprotected sex.”

This study contradicted previous research from Durham University.  The Durham study found that alcohol closes down the part of the brain that stops people from acting on impulses.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, excessive drinking is associated with numerous health problems including chronic diseases such as liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis, certain types of cancers, high blood pressure, and psychological disorders.  It can also lead to unintentional injuries, violence, sudden infant death syndrome, and alcohol abuse.  Excessive drinking is also harmful to a developing fetus.
