LAKELAND, Florida – The #8 seed Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University defeated the #3 seed Statesmen of Delta State University, 80-59, to advance to the Elite Eight of the 2014 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Tuskegee (21-11) was led by guard Kevin May, who scored a game-high of 24 points to go along with his five assists and three rebounds. Golden Tigers guard Elliot Dean (15 points), guard Javier McKinney (14 points) and forward Richard Dixon (10 points) all scored in double figures to bolster an offense that shot 50% from the field (30-60), 46% from three-point range (6-13) and 82% from the free throw line (14-17).
“Everything is coming together, both on and off the court,” said Golden Tigers head coach Leon Douglas. “I have an awesome group of young men. The kids have totally bought into everything we are doing. To beat a team like that, by 22 points, was an awesome job by my players. We’ve done a great job to this point, but the job is not complete.”
Tuskegee will next face the winner of the Metropolitan State College vs. Midwestern State University matchup, which is currently being played, on Wednesday, March 26.
