NCCU Will Face Iowa State In The NCAA Division I Tournament
North Carolina Central will face Iowa State in the second round of the NCAA Division I Tournament on Friday, March 21 at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.
The game will broadcast live on TNT, featuring all-start trio of Marv Albert as the play-by-play announcer, former NBA player and General Manager Steve Kerr managing the color analysis and Craig Sager as the sideline reporter, beginning approximately at 8:50 p.m. (CT).
NCCU received a 14 seed after winning its first Division I men’s basketball title with a 71-62 victory over Morgan State in the MEAC championship game on Saturday. The Eagles earned the conference’s regular season title with a 15-1 MEAC mark and currently boast a 25-8 overall record.
Iowa State earned a No. 3 seed in the East Region after defeating Baylor in the Big 12 Tournament, its first conference title since 2000. The Cyclones will be making their third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
The No. 3 seed is Iowa State’s highest seeding since the 2001 seed when it was a No. 2 seed. Ironically, the Cyclones were upset by MEAC member Hampton (No. 15) in the first-round game. It was the second time in MEAC history that a conference member seeded No. 15 defeated a No. 2 seed. Coppin State (1997) and Norfolk State (2012) have also defeated No. 2 seeded teams while seeded No 15 in the NCAA Tournament.
NCCU enters the NCAA Tournament with an impressive resume that includes a win against the No. 12-seed in the Midwest region, Wolfpack of NC State, on Nov. 20 (82-72), and a number of close loses to the No. 5-seed in the East Region Bearcats of Cincinnati (74-61) on Nov. 8, and lost to the No. 1-seed in the Midwest, Wichita State (77-66) on Dec. 22.
