Falcons Draft OLB Anthony Barr From UCLA In First Mock Draft
By Rob Hamilton / 92-9 The Game / CBS Atlanta
After the disappointing season, correction, massively disappointing season the Falcons just had and after all of the talk about the blatantly obvious need to fix the offensive line one would think the first move in the upcoming NFL Draft would be to grab a high ranking offensive lineman.
But that’s not how Mel Kiper’s first Mock Draft went.
Mel is generally known as the “Guru” of the NFL Draft by most in the business. His first mock draft has the Falcons taking Outside Linebacker Anthony Barr from UCLA as the sixth spot in the draft. That’s right. Defense.
And not only that, but Matthew Fairburn at SBNation.com says that Barr might be “one of the riskiest prospects in the draft.”
In case this does play out this way, here’s the skinny on Barr.
Anthony Barr stands 6′ – 4″ tall and weighs around 240 pounds. He’s a big man. He spent the first two years at running back at UCLA before Jim Mora, Jr. decided to move him to linebacker. He wasn’t much as a running back, but he has turned into one of the most talked about LB’s in the 2014 NFL Draft. He racked up 41 tackles for loss AND 23 sacks.
Very impressive numbers, but he’s also “still learning how to adapt his skill set to the other side of the ball” according to Fairburn. In other words, he might be a bigger project than most think.
What are your thoughts on Barr as the Falcons first pick? This heading in the right direction?
